SUP on Zhinvali — the turquoise reservoir in the mountains

Zhinvali Reservoir is the most photogenic spot for a SUP paddle near Tbilisi. The water genuinely is turquoise — mountains on three sides, the ruins of Zhinvali Fortress on the bank. On a still morning it feels like gliding across a mirror.

Stand-up paddleboarding at Zhinvali works for any skill level: no current, no waves, easy bank access. It's 60 km from Tbilisi along the Kazbegi highway — about an hour's drive. SUP on Algeti — pine forest and cliff faces in the water

Algeti Reservoir sits inside Algeti National Park — a protected pine and fir forest south of Tbilisi. The air is noticeably different from the city. What makes this SUP location unique: rock formations rise directly out of the water. You can paddle right up to them on your board.

A few kilometres away is Birtvisi Canyon — one of Georgia's most impressive gorge trails with cave fortresses. If you're renting a paddleboard for two days, this pairs perfectly: SUP paddle in the morning, hiking in the afternoon. Board rental in Tbilisi, go whenever you like.

SUP paddleboarding on Paravani Lake — Georgia's largest lake at 2,000m
🏔️ High altitude

SUP paddleboarding on Paravani — Georgia's largest lake

Paravani is a different scale entirely. The biggest lake in Georgia by surface area, at 2,073 metres above sea level. Open water to the horizon, mountain pastures all around, no other tourists in sight. Locals call it "Georgia's Iceland." A SUP trip to Paravani is already a small expedition.

~130 km drive, around 3 hours. At this altitude it's always cooler — bring a jacket even in summer. Get on your paddleboard in the morning before the wind picks up. Perfect to rent a SUP board for 2 days and combine with Sioni on the way there or back.

What to bring on a self-guided SUP trip

🧴

Sun protection

Water reflects UV intensity. SPF 50+ is a minimum for a full day of paddleboarding. A cap or buff helps too.

👟

Water shoes

Most lake banks are rocky. Shoes you're happy to get wet make entry and exit much easier on a SUP trip.

🧥

A light jacket

At altitude — even in summer — temperatures can drop in the afternoon. Paravani especially: bring layers.

💧

Water and food

Most mountain reservoirs have no cafes or shops. Pack enough before leaving Tbilisi for your paddleboarding day.

📱

Waterproof phone case

Your phone will get wet on a SUP paddle. A dry bag or waterproof pouch is essential for photos from the water.

Go early

Morning water is glassy, crowds are minimal, light for photos is best. Wind at mountain lakes usually picks up after midday.

Questions about SUP board rental and paddleboarding near Tbilisi

How do I rent a SUP board for a self-guided trip?

+

Message us on WhatsApp or Telegram, agree on a date and pick-up time. You collect the kit in Tbilisi and drive to whichever lake you've chosen. SUP board rental is 60 GEL for 1 day or 100 GEL for 2 days. Everything included: board, paddle, pump, life jacket and carry bag.

Do I need experience to go stand-up paddleboarding on my own?

+

Zhinvali, Algeti, Sioni and Mtskheta all have calm flat water — suitable for first-timers. Paravani is fine too, but wind can come up quickly on an exposed high-altitude lake. If it's your first time on a paddleboard, start with Algeti or Zhinvali.

When is the best time for a SUP trip to Zhinvali?

+

Mid-June through August. That's when the reservoir is at its highest level and the water is most turquoise and clear. May and September are possible but the water level is lower and the colour less vivid.

Can I combine a SUP paddle at Algeti with Birtvisi Canyon?

+

Yes — this is one of the best single-day formats. Morning paddleboarding at the reservoir, afternoon hiking in Birtvisi Canyon (~3 km away). A varied, full day without much driving.

Can I rent a SUP board for 2 days and visit multiple spots?

+

That's exactly what the 2-day rental (100 GEL) is designed for. Day 1 at Sioni, Day 2 at Algeti or Zhinvali. Or drive out to Paravani for an overnight and return the board the next day. Just let us know in advance.

Is a life jacket required for paddleboarding?

+

A life jacket is included with every rental. We strongly recommend wearing it — especially without a guide, at high-altitude lakes, or on your first SUP outing. At Paravani it's essential: the lake is shallow but wind can generate unexpected swells.
